Open Studios Dec 2011....

Well, here is a photo of my studio just before the doors opened to the public for our Christmas Open Studios Event. It was an evening of good chat and good wine! This image gives a good idea of the scale of my paintings. The Angel was quite a challenge to frame. Next time I will draw a bit smaller!

Angel Christmas cards for sale on Etsy..

I am now the proud owner of an Etsy Shop! I needed a place to sell my Limited Edition Prints as well as my new Christmas Cards. The cards are a new and exciting venture - I dont know why,  but I was more excited about getting the cards back from the printers than any painting I have seen back from the framers of late!  Ridiculous really.

Anyway,  you can buy a pack of 4 for $20 if you are interested.

The last Red Kimono for a while I think.

Here is the finished painting - about to go on show at the Edinburgh Art Fair for the first time at
The preview started an hour ago. I really did cut it a bit fine trying to get this done in time.

'Black Obi II'
oil on linen 50x100cm

Just got back from the photographers...sigh....

..I am a happy lady once again.
At last some decent images of my recent paintings. After a week of trying in vain to get a sharp focused image that showed up the correct reds, I gave up and went to a professional. The difference is incredible. Digital cameras have a problem seeing red I have discovered. so it was not just my incompetence and a rather old camera....
This still doesnt have title - I dont know why I am having a mind blank on this one..I am sure it will come to me eventually.

A Christmas Angel...

I have been wanting to do some charcoal drawings of the photos I took of Bernini's beautiful Angels on my trips to Rome and Florence. It's been a long wait but I have started this one of a nameless angel found in the Pantheon. If you know which angel he is please let me know.
I have never tried a classical cast/sculpture drawing before and it has ended up being far more labour intensive than I initially thought.

This had been sent to the printers to be made into a Christmas card. I will let you know where you can buy them in the next few days.

New Gallery...

I am pleased to say that after several long distance phone calls, I have joined the Wendt Gallery's stable of artists. The Wendt Galleries are based in New York, California and Singapore and are planning on expanding to Hong Kong.  This is a new and exciting venture for me and I couldnt have chosen nicer and more dynamic people to work with.

These are the new paintings I am exhibiting with Wendt.

A Tonal Study - Day 2 - Progress Report..

I managed to blag a whole day in the studio on Saturday. Tom kindly took the kids and I got to spend a good amount of time on this tonal work. I got stuck in straight away with filling in the rest of the figure and background and concentrated on pulling the highlights up and softening the mid tones. It is all very loosly painted. I have tightened up the detail in the face and hands. I dont know if I will add too much more detail as it feels nearly finished. This had been a rewarding couple of days work for me.

A new tonal painting started...

I have been concentrating so much on the red kimonos of late that I really needed to just paint for the sake of it. I started this painting yesterday afternoon and worked on it for about an hour. I knew I didnt have much time to do much as I had to leave to pick up the kids from school and nursery so I just painted like a mad thing. I was surprised at how much I managed to complete. This could be due to me not having the time to overthink it.
I took these with my camera phone so apologies for the quality  of the photos. I will post better photos once it is finished..

Red Kimono detail

This is a detail of the rough filling in of the head adding more colour and tone.
I have added more pattern onto the black obi, and glazed the whole background to give more depth.

New Red Kimono Painting - In a hurry!

I am hoping to paint a new Red Kimono work in time for the Edinburgh Art Fair. It needs to be done by the 10th November so I am cutting it fine! It is another in the series I have been working on from the photo shoot with my good friend and model Fran. I don't normally do as many paintings from the one shoot but the other two that were promised to Art Exposure Gallery have been snapped up.

These photos show the work done on Saturday 29th Oct, in roughly a 4 hour period. This is the alla prima underpainting stage so it is more about the colours and composition. The tonal range will come together in the next sitting.

On the easel - New landscapes

This is a quick landscape of a view from Armadale in Skye. I think it is nearly done. I might lighten the sky a bit more. Not sure though, as I do like to paint a murky day. Don't ask me why!

Christmas is coming....

I am in the confusing process of sorting paintings and sending them off to various galleries for their Christmas Shows.

This year I will be taking part for the first time in Caledoniart Gallery Christmas Exhibition held at the Air Gallery, Dover Street, Mayfair, London. They are a gallery who focus exclusively on Scottish Artists (obviously! - hence the name). I am in great company with 24 other artists such as Georgina McMaster and George Birrel.
Starts November 28th - 3rd Dec.

Silent Auction for Seeing is Believing Charity

On the 8th November 2011, two donated paintings will be up for sale at a Silent Auction in aid of  the 'Seeing is Believing' Charity. This charity is a global initiative to help tackle avoidable blindness.

They raise money to prevent and treat avoidable blindness in the poorest of communities around the world.
Without immediate, effective action the number of blind people worldwide is expected to increase from 39 million to 76 million people by 2020.
But, 80% of blindness can be treated or prevented, and the interventions are some of the most cost-effective in health-care; a cataract operation costs on average US$30, Vitamin A treatment around US$1.

This is hosted and sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank whom have a number of my paintings  in their collection.

My first blog is now!

Welcome to my blog site. This is still very much a work in progress, so bear with me as I get my stuff together and post again soon. Off to Glen Coe with the family tomorrow for a few days. I hope to come back with some inspiration for the next couple of landscapes. See you soon...
